The Discovery makes it to the future but is heavily damaged. Originally the refit concept included bandage like repairs with almost biological properties. There was also the idea of keeping parts as is but replacing zones with new tech (the interior sets would remain the same). Ultimately a refit style approach was taken. I looked a lot a the changes of the TOS Enterprise to the TMP Enterprise refit. But this was different as the tech involved was centuries ahead. Also, floating elements had become a hallmark of the ships of the future, so this had to be explored as well.
